MMA Athletes Association Announcement: GSP, Velasquez, Dillashaw, Cerrone, Kennedy + Rebney

Today the Mixed Martial Arts Athletes Association (MMAAA) held a two-hour media conference call to announce the organization of their fighters’ association. The five founding board members include former UFC champions Georges St-Pierre, Cain Velasquez and TJ Dillashaw, as well as Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone and Tim Kennedy. Bellator founder and former CEO Bjorn Rebney also participated on the call and was described as an advisor for the MMAAA. The goal of the association is to encourage drastic changes at the UFC by banding together high-profile fighters to make real change happen. Georges St-Pierre stated, “Most of the sports it’s 50/50; promoter/athlete. For us, we have around 8%. So when I talk about it’s not fair for me, it’s not only fair for me, it’s not fair to the TUF contestants even to Conor McGregor, who doesn’t have his fair share of what he should have.” Despite St-Pierre, Velasquez and Dillashaw being represented by Creative Artists Agency (CAA), a main rival to the new UFC owners, WME-IMG, Rebney promised CAA isn’t involved with the MMAAA, but they are “supportive of the athletes.”

  1. GSP is a multi million dollar athlete, who if so choosing, decides to not work another single day in his life ever again and retire, he could. To be a part of this shows how genuine and how big of a heart he has. Kudos to everyone.
